in Lucerne – Switzerland
Lucide is a restaurant that embodies modern refinement while embracing the artistic spirit of Lucerne, Switzerland. Located on the first floor of the Lucerne Culture and Congress House (KKL Luzern), the restaurant offers a dining experience that blends contemporary creativity with the rich traditions of the region. Designed by architect Jean Nouvel, the building itself is a landmark, and Lucide’s presence within it sets the stage for an experience that is as much about atmosphere as it is about gastronomy.
Finding the entrance to Lucide was not entirely straightforward, but after a bit of searching, we made our way inside. Upon arrival, we were greeted and guided to our table. While some guests are lucky enough to enjoy a stunning view of Lake Lucerne, our table was positioned away from the lakeside. This, combined with the fact that the air conditioning had yet to start working, made the initial impression feel less than ideal—though about an hour into the meal, the system finally began to function.
The menu structure at Lucide is unusual. Guests are presented with a list of individual dishes and given the option to create their own multi-course experience, selecting four, five, or six dishes to form their meal. The concept allows for personalization, though the explanation was somewhat challenging due to language barriers with our waiter. After a bit of back-and-forth, we were able to understand the approach and made our selections.
Among our choices was a dish featuring lobster and crabmeat. While one plate was perfectly executed, the lobster on the other was nearly raw. We addressed the issue with the staff, who responded swiftly and professionally—removing the dish and returning with a properly cooked version. In an admirable gesture of service, the dish was not included on the final bill, showing their commitment to ensuring guest satisfaction.
Despite these elements, something about the experience at Lucide felt restrained. The restaurant carries the prestige of its location and the refinement of its design, yet the overall impression lacked the depth one might expect from such a setting. While there were moments of attentiveness and thoughtfulness from the staff, the experience did not leave a lasting mark.
Lucide is a restaurant that holds promise, situated in a remarkable cultural institution with a talented chef at the helm. While the evening had its highlights, the visit left room for curiosity about how the restaurant might evolve in the future, perhaps finding a stronger sense of identity that resonates more deeply with its surroundings.
