in Hulshout – Belgium
Hof Ter Hulst, located in Hulshout, Belgium, is a refined dining destination set in a beautifully restored farmhouse that seamlessly blends rustic charm with timeless elegance. The building’s transformation into a culinary space has allowed it to maintain its historical character while offering a welcoming atmosphere.
Chef Johan Schroven leads the kitchen, bringing decades of experience and a deep respect for tradition. His culinary journey began with rigorous training at Scholteshof under Roger Souvereyns, followed by a stage at Louis XV in Monaco under Alain Ducasse. Seeking further refinement, he continued his development at Michel Guérard’s establishment in Eugénie-les-Bains and later worked with Philippe Rochat in Crissier, near Lausanne. After gaining valuable experience with these renowned chefs, he established himself at Hof Ter Hulst, where he has shaped the restaurant’s identity.
With its dedication to craftsmanship and hospitality, Hof Ter Hulst has earned recognition, including a Michelin star and high praise from Gault & Millau. The restaurant continues to evolve while staying true to its roots, offering a thoughtfully curated experience in a setting that reflects both history and innovation.
Walking into Hof Ter Hulst immediately transported me back to childhood memories of special family meals with my grandmother and parents. The atmosphere carried that familiar warmth—something intangible yet deeply comforting. Looking around the restaurant, I noticed several tables where three generations were gathered, sharing a meal together. It wasn’t that the place looked old; it simply had a timeless quality, a nostalgic charm that made it feel inviting.
For Sunday lunch, Hof Ter Hulst offers both a degustation menu and a seasonal menu. However, guests at the same table must choose the same menu, so we opted for the smaller seasonal menu at a very reasonable 65 euros. An added bonus was the option of wine or non-alcoholic pairings, offered at an exceptionally low price. What truly stood out was something I had never encountered before—if your glass was empty, it was simply refilled, no questions asked, and at just 20 euros for the pairing, it felt like a rare find.
The food itself was relatively simple but satisfying, especially considering the price point. Hof Ter Hulst turned out to be a delightful discovery, offering an atmosphere that felt both familiar and welcoming. Sometimes, a restaurant isn’t just about the meal—it’s about the experience, the sense of comfort it provides, and the memories it evokes. This was one of those places.
