in The Hague – Netherlands
In the heart of The Hague, just steps away from the Plein and within walking distance of the Mauritshuis and Central Station, Restaurant De Basiliek has been a fixture of the city’s dining scene since 1996. Its location on Korte Houtstraat places it right in the vibrant center, surrounded by history, culture, and the lively rhythm of the capital of South Holland.
The restaurant is led by chefs Chen Li Chung and Ben Verboon, who together embody both tradition and modern ambition. Chen grew up in the world of hospitality, with his family deeply rooted in The Hague’s restaurant history. His grandfather opened one of the first Chinese restaurants on the Plein, and his parents later founded De Basiliek itself. After formal training at the Mondriaan culinary school, Chen honed his skills at renowned establishments such as Seinpost under Gert-Jan Cieremans, the Michelin-starred Vermeer in Amsterdam, and even spent time in Madrid before returning to the family business.
Ben Verboon’s path was more hands-on, beginning in kitchens at a young age and learning through direct experience rather than long years in culinary school. He has been part of De Basiliek for nearly a decade, steadily growing into his role as co-chef. His approach reflects a deep curiosity and commitment to mastering techniques through practice and collaboration.
Together, Chen and Ben carry forward the legacy of De Basiliek as a family-run establishment, blending their personal histories with the restaurant’s long-standing presence in The Hague. Their story is as much about heritage and dedication as it is about the city itself, making De Basiliek not just a place to dine, but a part of The Hague’s cultural fabric.
