De Pastorie: Where History Meets Warmth in Lichtaart
Nestled in the heart of Lichtaart, De Pastorie is more than a fine dining destination – it’s a story of heritage, family, and evolution. Originally built as a 17th-century parsonage, this historic building has long been a landmark in the Kempen. In 2025, it underwent its most ambitious transformation yet. The renovation preserved the soul of the pastorie while introducing modern elegance: old garages and annexes made way for a sleek extension housing a state-of-the-art kitchen and a climate-controlled wine cellar. Inside, original architectural details were lovingly restored, while the former salon was reimagined as an intimate private dining room for up to ten guests. The outdoor spaces were revitalised with landscaped gardens, creating a serene escape that harmonises with the building’s history.
A Warm Welcome Awaits
Step inside the renewed property and you’re greeted by the gracious hostess and Chef Carl Wens himself. Carl, who has been the driving force behind De Pastorie since the early 1990s, now entrusts much of the kitchen’s reins to his son, Wout. This father-and-son duo represents a perfect blend of tradition and innovation, ensuring the restaurant continues to evolve while staying true to its roots.
From the moment you enter, you feel at home. This isn’t just a restaurant – it’s a place where homely conviviality takes centre stage. The atmosphere is warm, inviting, and effortlessly elegant, making every visit feel like a special occasion.
A Culinary Journey Full of Surprises
Dish after dish, you’re treated to the creative flair of the chefs. Highlights include a refreshing amuse of butternut and passion fruit, another featuring smoked eel, celeriac, and “ratte” potato, and a delicate touch of spice with turbot paired with a jalapeño-based espuma. Each plate reflects precision and imagination, offering a dining experience that feels both refined and personal.
This was my third visit to De Pastorie, and each time, you sense they’ve taken another step forward. Are they on their way to that coveted second Michelin star? It certainly feels like it.
Honest Reflections
Perfection is a journey, and even the finest experiences leave room for nuance. On this occasion, the hare was slightly overcooked, leaving it a touch dry, and the final dessert – a millefeuille – could have benefited from a hint of extra freshness or acidity. Small details, but worth noting in an otherwise exceptional experience.
A Place Where History Lives On
De Pastorie is not just about dining; it’s about feeling connected – to history, to craftsmanship, and to the people who make it all possible. The 2025 renovation marks a new chapter, blending heritage with modern sophistication. For those who value authenticity and elegance, De Pastorie offers an experience unlike any other – a place where you feel at home, yet constantly surprised.
