in Leuven – Belgium
In the heart of Leuven, just a short stroll from the central station, Zarza stands as a beacon of refined dining. Located on Bondgenotenlaan, the restaurant occupies a historic townhouse that effortlessly blends authentic architectural elegance with modern artistic touches. High ceilings, ornate mouldings and large windows flood the space with natural light, while contemporary design elements create a harmonious balance between classic charm and modern sophistication. Add to this a serene city garden—a tranquil escape from the lively rhythm of the street—and you have the perfect setting for an intimate yet stylish dining experience.
At the helm of Zarza’s kitchen is chef Gert Cordemans, a respected name in the Belgian culinary scene. His reputation has been built on years of dedication to gastronomy, shaped by experiences in renowned establishments and a deep appreciation for local produce. Cordemans’ approach combines creativity with precision, ensuring that Zarza remains a destination for those seeking elegance on the plate./p>
But what happens when expectations meet reality? Recently, during a two-course lunch, the experience began promisingly with a delightful amuse-bouche and a well-executed starter. Yet, beneath the dish lay a dressing-like sauce—far too much of it. For a restaurant boasting a Gault & Millau score of 14, attention to detail is paramount. Even in a simple lunch menu, diners expect finesse. Unfortunately, the main course revealed another lapse: the sauce was poured so generously that some spilled onto the rim of the plate. Presentation matters—after all, the eye eats first.
Does this mean Zarza falls short of its reputation? Not necessarily. Every restaurant has its off days, and the flavours were still commendable. But fine dining is about more than taste; it’s about precision, aesthetics and the feeling that every element has been considered. Will Zarza deliver that next time? We’ll find out soon—because despite these minor missteps, the allure of Cordemans’ kitchen and the charm of Zarza’s setting make it worth a return visit.
