High Above the Dolomites: A Visit to AlpiNN by Norbert Niederkofler

There are restaurant locations that impress, and then there are restaurant locations that leave you wondering how anyone ever decided to build a dining destination there in the first place. AlpiNN by Norbert Niederkofler firmly belongs in the latter category. Perched at an altitude of 2,275 metres on Kronplatz (Plan de Corones) above Brunico in South Tyrol, it is not the kind of place you accidentally stumble upon during a leisurely drive through the mountains.

Getting there is part of the experience. The only way to reach AlpiNN is via a cable car ride that takes around fifteen minutes, steadily carrying visitors higher into the heart of the Dolomites. As the valleys disappear beneath you and the jagged mountain peaks begin to dominate the horizon, it becomes clear that this restaurant is as much about its setting as it is about dining. The journey creates a sense of anticipation long before you take your seat.

AlpiNN opened in 2018 and is located within the striking LUMEN Museum of Mountain Photography, a modern structure that sits proudly on the summit of Kronplatz. Combining mountain culture, architecture and hospitality, the venue offers some of the most breathtaking views in northern Italy. On a clear day, the panorama stretches across the Dolomites, creating an ever-changing backdrop that shifts with the light, the weather and the seasons.

The driving force behind the project is Norbert Niederkofler, one of the most influential chefs to emerge from the Italian Alps. Born in South Tyrol’s Ahrntal Valley, Niederkofler grew up surrounded by the mountains that would later define much of his professional identity. His culinary education took him beyond Italy, allowing him to gain experience in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the United States. These international experiences helped shape his outlook before he eventually returned to South Tyrol and established himself as one of the country’s leading culinary figures.

A pivotal chapter in his career began when he took charge of Restaurant St. Hubertus at Hotel Rosa Alpina in San Cassiano. Over the years, he transformed the restaurant into one of Italy’s most acclaimed fine dining destinations, earning widespread international recognition and helping to place South Tyrol firmly on the global gastronomic map. His philosophy, often referred to as “Cook the Mountain”, reflects his deep connection to Alpine culture and the natural environment that surrounds him.

AlpiNN can be seen as a continuation of this vision. Rather than creating another luxury restaurant in a city centre or historic building, Niederkofler chose a mountaintop location that embodies the spirit of the region. The project feels inseparable from the landscape around it. Every aspect of the experience, from the cable car journey to the sweeping views over the Dolomites, reinforces the unique character of South Tyrol.

Before visiting, I had already encountered countless photographs of AlpiNN on Instagram. Social media is filled with images of the spectacular views, the dramatic architecture and the dining room seemingly suspended above the mountains. One section in particular appears repeatedly in these photographs: “The View”. As the name suggests, these tables offer the most spectacular vantage points in the restaurant. Guests dining in this area are required to choose a fixed tasting menu, making it the most complete and immersive experience available.

My own visit, however, took place in a different section of the restaurant called “Food Space”. Here, guests have the flexibility of ordering à la carte, an option that suited me perfectly. After an already packed culinary week filled with memorable lunches and dinners, I was not looking for another extensive gastronomic marathon. Instead, I opted for a more restrained experience consisting of a single main course and dessert.

For my main course, I selected the Rigatoni pasta with grilled rocket pesto, “Genuss Bunker” goat cheese and juniper. It was unmistakably Italian in its execution. The pasta was cooked perfectly al dente, retaining the firmness and texture that define great Italian pasta dishes. The goat cheese added considerable richness and made the dish surprisingly substantial, yet it remained immensely enjoyable. It was one of those dishes that appears relatively simple on paper but delivers a great deal of satisfaction with every bite.

To finish, I chose a dessert based around vanilla ice cream. After the hearty pasta course, it provided a lighter conclusion to the meal and complemented the relaxed pace of the afternoon.

Yet, despite the enjoyable food, what lingered most in my memory afterwards was the extraordinary setting. Looking out across the mountains, it becomes impossible to separate the dining experience from the location itself. AlpiNN is not merely a restaurant at high altitude; it is a destination that requires intention. Nobody arrives here by chance. Every guest has made a deliberate decision to ascend the mountain, ride the cable car and spend time high above the valleys of South Tyrol.

That sense of purpose gives AlpiNN a character unlike many other fine dining destinations. The restaurant feels deeply rooted in its surroundings and offers visitors the opportunity to experience one of the most remarkable locations in European gastronomy. Whether seated in The View with its panoramic vistas or in Food Space enjoying a more flexible meal, every guest becomes part of an experience defined as much by altitude and landscape as by the restaurant itself.

For travellers exploring the Dolomites, AlpiNN represents more than a lunch stop or dinner reservation. It is a journey to the top of a mountain, a chance to experience the vision of Norbert Niederkofler in one of the most dramatic settings imaginable, and a reminder that sometimes the road, or in this case the cable car, is just as memorable as the destination.
