Tinelle

in Mechelen – Belgium

Tinèlle is a restaurant that seamlessly blends history with contemporary dining. Located in Mechelen, it is housed within Het Predikheren, a former 17th-century monastery and military hospital that has been transformed into a cultural hub. The restaurant occupies the left wing of the building, an area once used by traveling monks for rest, now repurposed into a welcoming space where tradition meets modern gastronomy.

The vision behind Tinèlle is brought to life by chef Ken Verschueren and Jenny Callens. Verschueren, who previously worked as a sous-chef at Oud Sluis and earned a Michelin star at his own restaurant De Tuinkamer, brings a wealth of experience and a deep appreciation for culinary craftsmanship. His approach focuses on refining classic Franco-Belgian cuisine, presenting familiar flavors with a fresh perspective. Callens, overseeing the dining room, ensures that the restaurant maintains its inviting and lively atmosphere, making guests feel at home while enjoying a thoughtfully curated experience.

Chef Ken Verschueren has also crafted an accessible three-course lunch menu, offering high-quality seasonal ingredients prepared with precision. Without unnecessary embellishments, the focus remains on solid cooking and delivering a satisfying meal. For the price, it is an excellent choice for a business lunch, combining an elegant setting with a straightforward approach to food.

However, the casual nature of the restaurant occasionally leans a little too far. There were moments during our visit when service felt somewhat inattentive. On multiple occasions, the waitstaff passed our table without noticing that the water glasses were empty, prompting us—and other diners—to pour the water ourselves. In a fine-dining environment, such details matter, and these lapses in attentiveness detracted slightly from the overall experience.

Tinèlle offers a dining experience rooted in both history and modern craftsmanship. While the restaurant’s relaxed atmosphere contributes to its charm, attention to detail remains an important aspect of hospitality. Whether visiting for a carefully prepared meal or a leisurely lunch, Tinèlle presents a unique blend of past and present in its approach to dining.
